About our program

Green Lawn invites you to remember its past and honor those who rest in our "VERY SPECIAL PARK". Green Lawn Cemetery, incorporated in 1848, is the second largest cemetery in the state of Ohio, with 360 acres of beautiful sculpted stone, trees, wildlife and history.

To help share the beauty and preserve the memories of those who rest in Green Lawn, volunteers are needed for various projects. Several projects are available spanning a broad range of interests and skills. One of the many projects available to volunteers is our new Adopt-A-Lot Program.

Requirements

All that is required is a visit to Green Lawn to locate a gravesite that may interest you, or to select one from a list that is available at the office. You may seek a site with an interesting monument, one that has high visibility or one that strikes you as attractive for any number of reasons. An application is required for the Adopt-A-Lot Program. Complete the form at the bottom of this page or you may pick one up at the Cemetery office. You will be asked to provide the name on the monument or markers, date of death of at least one individual, the section number (which is provided on a metal marker around the outer portion of each section) and if possible the lot number. THERE IS NO ADOPTION COST. Once the application has been submitted to the Volunteer Project Committee, and approved, you will receive a letter of notification along with an "Adoption Certificate" for the site(s) you have selected. This letter will provide you with a brief outline of the site or sites that you have selected.

Leading the Troops
All that is required of you once an adoption has taken place, is that you oversee the site by visiting it regularly with proper remembrance. Assist in maintaining the upkeep by removing weeds or trash that may litter the site and trim any obstruction away from the monument or mausoleum. You may place flowers on the lot for ceremonial days such as Memorial Day, or as you see fit. In some cases the planting of flowers in existing urns or in small beds next to the monument may be allowed but must be approved in advance by the Grounds Superintendent. Many of the older sites in Green Lawn are never visited and with our new adoption program individuals and organizations can continue to pay personal respects at, or beautify the gravesites of those who contributed to the building of our city, state and nation, and who now rest at Green Lawn.

VOLUNTEER TO BE PART OF A COMMUNITY THAT REMEMBERS THE PAST

Please note: Before cleaning any monument or mausoleum please check with the General Manager or the Grounds Superintendent of Green Lawn Cemetery. Many cleaning chemicals will damage the memorial stones irreparably.

If you are interested in becoming a "Friend" of Green Lawn, you're invited to learn more on our web site, or visit the office.
